London 2012 Water Polo arena designer appointed

The Olympic Delivery Authority has appointed David Morley Architects to design the temporary Water Polo venue for the London 2012 Games.

The design team, appointed through the ODA’s Design Services Framework, will develop a design solution that maximises the use of hired and reusable components. The Water Polo venue will be delivered by contractors and suppliers through the existing ODA Managed Package frameworks set up to efficiently deliver a range of temporary and smaller permanent venues. Construction will start in spring 2011 to be completed by spring 2012 ready for test events. In legacy the venue will be removed so that the riverside area to the north of the Aquatics Centre can be developed by the Olympic Park Legacy Company.

Christmas Party

Thought I would give this a go so that we can get everyones input.

I know its only September but its time to start thinking about the Christmas party. Was just wondering if we could get idea's from everyone as to what they would want to do.

At the moment we think a buffet somewhere might be a good idea so that everyone can socialise and mingle.

We will also be arranging a social where we can invite all of the younger ones so idea's for that too would be much appreciated.

Squad Updates

Senior men's Squad:- Captain Steve Fairhead, Vice Dave Bush
Following a slow start to 2009 with several players having left the club during 2008 this squad has gone through a transition stage with several new members being welcomed into the club this squad is showing signs of being competitive again for the later part of the year with some respectable results including 4^th in the recent Lady Richmond Brown Tournament and a close defeat against a very strong City of Southampton side in their last game of the Hampshire league season .

Senior Ladies Squad:- Captain Pauline Lipscombe, Vice Hannah Chilton
This year the squad have combined with Worthing to enter the London league and with one weekend left are favourites to win their division on a local level the Basingstoke team have had notable results against the Dorset County side and West London Penguin ( a side containing some national league players)

Juniors ( born 1991 or later):-
have combined with the rest of Hampshire squad to enter the London League with the majority of the squad aged 15 this is seen as a long term development for them so far they have competed well against some strong side with current GB squad members they still have 2 tournaments to go but with a bit of luck are looking good for a 3^rd place finish.

Youth squad ( born 1995 or later) :-
from their first weekend or London League Tournament they only lost 1 game and are joint top of the league and are certainly hoping to push on and now win the title with 2 weekends to go 12^th July and 13^th September

Academy squad ( Friday junior session):-

Waterpolo Website Transformation

Thanks to the work of Brian Tyndall and Gavin Bridger the Waterpolo section website has been updated also includes a member's only forum (currently only for waterpolo section members) you should have been sent a login if not contact Gerry.

Team selection:-
In an effort to lessen the load on coaches and team captains all teams will be selected via Google calendars please support this process and respond to the team calls as soon as possible ( might have to check spam filter to ensure you are not missing out )

Hampshire games 20^th June once again the club has been asked to represent the town at the Hampshire games and we will be sending 2 teams ( key stage 3)

Upcoming British Red Cross Tournaments

Volunteers required to help run a successful Tournament that also helps raise funds for the Basingstoke Branch of the British Red Cross if you are available for 4 hours on Saturday 4^th July 12:30-16:30 (for age group born 1994 or later) or for the younger age group on Saturday 3^rd October (for age group born 1996 or later) 12:30-16:30 then please contact Gerry

Funding crisis sees London 2012 Polo hopes washed away

A decision by UK Sport's board not to allocate realistic funding to eight Olympic and four Paralympic sports has had an immediate and catastrophic effect on the lives of 32 young water polo players and their coaches.

After the summer break all training times are now back to normal. So, 20:15 - 21:15 Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 20:30 - 21:30 on Sunday nights.

Training with Basingstoke Bluefins Water Polo Club!

Years 7, 8 & 9 Girls and Boys

Basingstoke Aquadrome

Friday’s 5.15-6.05pm 25th April
2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd May
6th, 13th and 20th June

A trials tournament will be held involving all
participants on 6th June. Competitors will also be given FREE access to the Aquadrome’s ‘Party Wave Rave’ session in the Lagoon afterwards.

Get Active! Basingstoke's sporting community welcomes new members

One way to ‘Get Active’ is to take part in Sporting Activities either as a competitor, official, coach or general volunteer. Basingstoke & Deane has a very active Sporting community which welcomes new members and if looking for more details, check out the county website for information on our local clubs.

During Get Active week a few local clubs are opening doors to allow potential new members to drop in and see what’s on offer, perhaps join in a taster session or chat to officials and see if there is a role for you. Details on each event will be published on each relevant website over the next few weeks.

Basingstoke & North Hants Cricket Club - Club planning to run a taster session on Tuesday evening July 8th.

Basingstoke Gymnastics Club - Club planning Get Active activities.

Totally Tennis - Club also planning Get Active activities.

Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club - Demo taster event.

Basingstoke Volleyball Club - Plan to have taster session on Wednesday 9th July at War Memorial Park 7-9.

Basingstoke Bluefins Swimming Club - "Open Night" on Monday 7th July from 17.15- 22.00.

Academy 17.15-18.00 / Young Achievers 18.00-18.45 / Competition Squad 18.45-20.15 / Performance 19.00-20.00 ( Land Training) / Club Squad 20.15-21.00 / Masters 21.00-22.00

If interested people turn up on the Monday night and they will be able to see what the swimmers do and arrange to come to a "taster session" on Saturday 12th July between 9.00-9.30am.

Basingstoke Waterpolo Club - Taster sessions to encourage new people to come along and try out. Age 14 and over on Thursday 10th July 20:15-21:15 and for those 13 and under on Friday 11th July 17:15-18:00.

Basingstoke Hockey Club - Exhibition / taster event at Down Grange.

Basingstoke Rugby Club - Plan to organise some form of exhibition / taster event at Down Grange.

Basingstoke & Mid Hants Athletic Club - Taster event at Down Grange on Sunday July 6th alongside the club’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and 60 Mile fundraising relay.
